Be it the dome of the "Lutherse kerk" in Amsterdam or the river "de Vecht" passing through the village of Loenen, in this section one will be able to see life-like places through the eyes of the artist as they still exist today. The Dutch landscape painting has its roots in the 17th century and, in that time, was admired as well in as outside the Low Countries. The tradition dwindled a bit in the 18th century, but had its revival in the 19th . All throughout the 19th century, pictures of town views were made which looked authentic. Some were but others were so-called capriccios: architectonic reconstructions of numerous elements of historical towns. An example of this style of painting is a work, included in this sale, by the artist J. F. Spohler (lot 204). Later on, artists found the idealised reality of the Romanticists too stifeling and, inspired by the Barbizon School, took their easel outside to paint 'en plein air' in a strive for a more direct contact with their surroundings. They rendered impresions of nature, not clinging to individual details, whilst leaving the authenticity of the subject matter intact. This evolved via the Hague School into the Amsterdam Impressionists, represented in this sale by W.B. Tholen (lot 234, 241) , and the Dutch Impressionists, among others by N. Bastert (lot 249) and J. H. Wijsmuller (lot 195, 200, 202, 217, 218) . In the 20th century the tradition of landscape painting continuded with the luminists, focusing on the expression of light and hereby influencing painting in an ineffaceable way. A great number of trends developed, one being the dark emotional style of the Bergense School of wich works by M. Wiegman (lot 235) and G. de Jong (lot 242) are included.
