Lot Essay

The material quality of Schumacher's paintings has been central to his work since the 1950s, when he began treating colour as matter, rather than as the vehicle towards representing anything outside the picutre. He called the resulting pictures Tastobjekte, tactile objects, where the viewer could scan the picture surface as if looking at a geological formation, a distant landscape.

Figur is an example of Schumacher's sensual style of the sixties, where the monochromatic reduction of colour is delicately interrupted by the incised, structured line. Centering the image, the line becomes like a caligraphic symbol, only suggesting the impact of the artist's gesture.

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Dr. Ulrich Schumacher, the artist's son, and will be included in the forthcoming Schumacher catalogue raisonné.
