Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Pascal de Sadeleer and Olivier Bertrand who will include it in their forthcoming van Rysselberghe catalogue raisonné. They have suggested that the artist's monogram is not contemporary to the work.

Ronald Feltkamp has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Elisabeth van Rysselberghe, represented in this work, is featuring in a similar composition in the famous monumental staircase mural La lecture dans le jardin of 1902, in the Hotel Solvay in Brussels. The hotel was built by Victor Horta, with the mural commissioned especially for the building.
