Lot Essay

The bureau plat with its cameo medallion reflects the fashion for the romantic Louis XVI style promoted at the International exhibition of 1862 by firms such as Wright & Mansfield of London and Lamb of Manchester. Appropriate for a bedroom apartment, this writing table with its bronze sphynx guarded corners is embellished in the manner of the 18th century bonheur du jour with pearl wreath cameos evoking love poetry and depicting 'Cupid taught by Venus' and 'Venus bound by Cupid' (R Reilly, Wedgwood, vol II, Over Wallop, 1989, pp 516, 517 and 513)
