Lot Essay

The bust derives from Sir Francis Chantrey's marble bust executed in 1821 for the Duke of Devonshire, and relates to bronze figures executed by the court goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell. For a full discussion, see 'The Chantrey Ledger', The Walpole Society, vol. LVI, 1991/1992, p. 165-166. A similar bust on a Siena marble plinth was sold anonymously at Christie's King Street on 20th September 2001, lot 77.
