carved with the initials 'JB' and date 1638, the door centred by a 17th century panel depicting figure stood on a fish above two late 16th century portrait panels, an extract from an old sale catalogue is stuck to the inside of door (See Illustration), slight damages -- 29in. (73.5cm.) wide, 47in. (119.5cm.) high, 20½in. (52cm.) deep

It is possible that the cupboard was sold in Knight, Frank & Rutley's 'Newstead Abbey' sale on the 10th of January 1921, the initials and date having been associated with John, 1st Lord Byron (d.1652). It may havel been introducedrd to Newstead by Thomas Wildman (d.1859) who acquired the Abbey in 1818.
