[SAN FRANCISCO--AUCTION]. Sale of Lots in the City of San Francisco, at public auction, on Wednesday, November 28, 1849. George E. Tyler, Auctioneer. San Francisco: Alta California Press, 1849.
4o (219 x 160 mm). 4 leaves, including self wrappers; cloth slipcase. Provenance: Guy P. Wayman (gift inscription from Philip B. Bekeard on title dated 7/31/1917).
Printed note on title verso reads: "By Virtue of an Order of the Town Council, to me directed, there will be offered for Sale at Public Auction, in front of the Alcalde's Office, in Portsmouth Square, on Wednesday the 28th day of November, at 10 o'clock A.M., Lots numbered as per Map in the city Surveyor's Office, as shown in the following Catalogue. John W. Geary, First Alcalde." A fascinating record of an auction sale of 210 lots of land (often consecutive block lots), comprising some of San Francisco's most prime real estate. Cowan records another catalogue from the San Francisco auctioneer George E. Tyler for a sale held 10 December 1849, but not this earlier sale. See Cowan (1933), p.379. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EPHEMERAL ITEM DOCUMENTING THE LAYING OUT OF THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO.
