The subject of the present work is derived from a lost van Eyck panel seen by Marcantonio Michiel in Milan circa 1530, which Silver (loc. cit.) suggests may have been a commissioned portrait, possibly by the Bruges community of Italian financiers (such as Giovanni Arnolfini, who ordered other panels from van Eyck). For a discussion of the subject and the various known copies, see Silver (ibid.).
