The present composition repeats that of a slightly smaller picture in the Nelson Gallery of Art, Kansas City, Missouri (signed and dated 1744, 51 x 67 cm.; Arisi, op. cit., p. 401, no. 340). There are some minor differences in the staffage between the two: here the young boy runs with both arms raised, while the woman on the right carries the basket on her head rather than under her arm. A preparatory sketch for the woman is in the British Museum, London (folio 77).
Arisi notes that composition itself is partly derived from a painting in the Almagià collection, Rome, a work that he attributes to Panini (working in the style of Giovanni Ghisolfi) but which is ascribed by others to Ghisolfi himself (ibid., p. 238, no. 42, for a fuller discussion).
