Lot Essay

For Man Ray play was an important element in the creation and involvement with his works; therefore the evolution into what the artist referred to as 'toys' and other games seemed quite natural. The foundation for the first chess set design beagn with simple objects that were scattered about the artist's studio including pieces from a broken violin and draughtsman's model parts. In 1945, a limited edition of six wood sets was issued. Each chess piece incorporates a different symbol: the form of the Egyptian pyramid was used to conote the King; a medieval conical-head dress stood for the Queen. Even the pawns are designed with a sturdy, ergonomic shape that is the most simplified. Man Ray went on to design several versions including sets with polished bronze pieces.
