Lot Essay

This sculpture is from a series of small scale studies for one of Lipchitz's major works, Bellerophon Taming Pegasus. Fleeing the facist regimes of Europe, Lipchitz arrived in America in 1941 and spent the majority of the last thirty-two years of his life working in New York. During this time he executed many important public commissions and his 38 foot high Bellerophon remains one of the largest public sculptures in America.
Pierre Levai has confirmed the authenticity of this work.
