Lot Essay

The present work was conceived in 1961 as a double-sided relief sculpture. According to April Paul, Homage to Marc Chagall (No. 2) recalls "the Eiffel Tower with its scaffold and reflects some of Chagall's favorite subjects, such as an Hassidic fiddler, flying angels, bouquets of flowers, and at the base, his portrait. The sculputre stands balanced on the four quadripod legs, as does the original monument in Paris. Gross and Chagall were friends. The No. 2 refers to the second of three separate designs that Gross created that year to honor his friend."

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné by April Paul, of the sculpture of Chaim Gross.
