Lot Essay

Although the graphic source for the present charger has not been identified, it is most likely based on an engraving by Antonio Tempesta. Cf. A. Alinari and M. Spallanzani, ed., "Maioliche nel Bargello," Florence, 1991, no. 4 and Conti, nos. 364 and 366 for other plates from the same workshop painted with battle scenes after engravings by Tempesta. Cf. also Giacomotti, no. 1379 for another plate from this series depicting scenes from the life of Alexander based on engravings by Tempesta attributed to Francesco Grue and dated to the second half of the 17th century.
