Richard and Erna Flagg-My Parents
My Parents were extraordinary people in the true sense of the word. They spent a lifetime searching out the very best that the human spirit produces. Their joviality, enthusiasm, generosity and breadth of vision were unmatchable. So was their sense of civic responsibility. They collected art to share rather than to hoard, as is evidenced by the magnificent contributions to their beloved adopted city by way of the Milwaukee Art Museum in the fields of Haitian art and Renaissance and Medieval painting, sculpture and clocks. When asked about his collecting my father would say that he really collected people best of all. And indeed he did-acquaintances became friends, friends, confidants.
Both my parents collected for their love of the object only and never had "investment" on their minds. Dad was often heard to say, "If it doesn't sing to you, don't buy it!" My parents collected almost anything that appealed to them, and most often were correct in their judgement of the excellence of the object.
My father was himself an artist and a perfectionist, so having grown up with this man as an only child, I was indeed privileged to learn from him. He was a strict taskmaster, but a font of knowledge. We shared many secret purchases that I was to keep quiet about until the proper moment when he would surprise my mother with them. We cleaned, polished and discovered together, especially when I photographed and catalogued his entire collection- a real labor of love!
I sincerely hope that the next collector to fall in love with these beautiful objects will enjoy them as much as my father, mother and I did; not only for their beauty, but for their place in history. Knowing my father, he will be watching over them.
