Lot Essay

This form of Renaissance carved walnut trestle table was made in the 16th century in France as well as in Italy. The current table however shows characteristics of carving and design used throughout France, for example the haut-relief carving of the caryatids. Two examples of similar French trestle tables are found at the Renaissance château d'Ecouen and are illustrated in J.Boccador, Le Mobilier Français du Moyen Age à la Renaissance p.268, fig. 204 and in A.Boroli, Tavoli, Tavolini, Consoles dal Rinascimento al Déco, p. 89, fig.25. Other similar French trestle tables are discussed and illustrated in J.Boccador, Le Mobilier Français du Moyen Age à la Renaissance, pp. 267-270.
