Lot Essay

Open This End circa 1962-1964 is a classic Warhol pop sculpture, stemming from the same impulse as his concurrent Brillo Box sculptures in which the artist silkscreened pre-existing logos onto objects. From his first years in New York in the early 1950s when he achieved success with whimsical commercial illustrations of jewelry, handbags and shoes, Warhol's work has been inextricably bound with fashion. Open This End exemplifies the artist's entwined passions for fashion, glamour and art. 'He had one motivating idea. Absolutely central. He was interested in the idea of glamour. Glamour fascinated him.' (Robert Pincus-Witten, interview with Patrick Smith, Andy Warhol's Art and Films, 1981, p. 458).
