Lot Essay

Mouth, 1967 is a preparatory study that Wesselmann executed for the catalogue cover of his 1968 show at Daytons Gallery 12 in Minneapolis. The cover depicts a nearly identical rendering of Mouth but rendered in vamp red that was influenced by Marilyn Monroe's lips.
