A TANK TEST MODEL FOR A PROPOSED DESIGN OF A 5.5 METER RACING YACHT
Ludders Marine, American, ca. 1962
This model, tested by the Stephens Institute was a proposed design for a 5.5 meter racing yacht. The hull of the model is built up in wood, then interior has been carved hollow, and the exterior of the hull has been shaped, faired, and finished to racing condition. On the leading edge of the bow, down to the bottom of the keel, is covered with a coarse sand which has been glued in place. This sand was used to create a disturbance to the laminar flow so the flow below the waterline could be more easily documented. The exterior of the hull is marked with the number 2669 which is the identification number for the Davidson Lab at the Stephens Institute where the model was tested. These models were built to a scale of 1 ft: 6 ft. Dated December 20th 1962, and signed with the initials L.L.B.
63 x 13½ x 12½ in. (160 x 34.4 x 31.9 cm.)
