Lot Essay
In this work the observer looks northward out to see across Liverpool Bay. Just passing behind the lighthouse is an inward bound ship in the Rock Channel making Liverpool, which lies upriver behind the observer and on the right of the picture. The lighthouse came into service about 1831-2 and its very accurately detailed representation here, suggests the possibility that Salmon may have sketched it on the spot. See another view of the lighthouse by Robert Salmon in his painting 'A regatta off New Brighton in the River Mersey' signed and dated 1845 (Marine Art & the Clyde by A. S. Davidson, p. 46 detail view)
