Lot Essay

The Blackwall frigate Nile was built for R. Green at the Blackwall yard and launched in 1850. She was registered at 1,182 gross tons and had principal dimensions of 173ft LOA and 36.5ft Beam. She traded principally between London and India. Her first master, Captain Nisbet, kept her for over ten years before relinquishing command. By the mid-1870's she had been sold and was in the Mediterranean trade. The painting depicts the Nile returning past the White Cliffs of Dover.
