Lot Essay

A. Narenus, also identified as Abraham van der Neer is a little known painter thought to have been a pupil of Rembrandt and active circa 1639-42. He is recorded as being a painter of portraits, figure subjects and landscapes.

Belasarius was a famous general serving under the Byzantine emperor Justinian, and was to recover large areas of Italy from the Goths. He was falslely accused of conspriacy against the emperor and was imprisoned, being deprived of his honours and with his fortunes in decline. He was to be recognised by a passing soldier in a street of Constantinople (?), where he is thought to have been reduced to a beggar.
