Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Rudi Ekkart of the R.K.D. for identifying the present sitter as Maria Crap (died 1727) from Enkhuizen. He points out that the picture has a pendant in the Portrait of Pieter Uyl in a Landscape, also signed, sold at Christie's, London, 16 December 1988, lot 93. Both pictures were presumably commissioned to celebrate their marriage in 1674. The artist is as yet unidentified.
