A GEORGE III SILVER CAKE BASKET
MARK OF EDWARD ALDRIDGE, 1766
of shaped oval form with gadroon mount, the sides pierced with a trio of patterns, interspersed by single asymmetric flutes, the centre engraved with an armorial surrounded by rococo-style decoration, the swing-handle pierced with quatrefoils, on a pierced and gadrooned foot, 36cm (14 1/8in) across, 31oz.

Lot Essay

The arms are purportedly those of Hammond of South Wootton, Norfolk; probably for Richard Hamond (d.1776) who succeeded his father Antony, in 1734. His mother Susan was the sister of Sir Robert Walpole, First Lord of the Treasury, 1721-42.
