Lot Essay

This fine dresser was made in the Conway Valley of North Wales within a regional tradition of predominantly oak furniture. This example is extremely rare, being made largely from fruitwood, probably Pear (pyrus communis), with the sides of the rack in oak, the shelves in pine but faced with fruitwood and with pine elsewhere as the secondary timber. Distinctive to this region of Wales are features such as the shaped sides of the rack and the use of applied flat door panels whose shape reflects the design of longase clock doors from this region.
