with a shaped and channelled toprail branded R L, above three panels with stylised scrolling motifs flanked by ears, the downswept arms on baluster supports, the solid seat hinged for commode use, on block and baluster legs joined by square section stretchers -- 43in. (110cm.) high

A very similar chair, though without hinging seat, is to be found in Conisborough Church in South Yorkshire and a box with the same distinctive carved detail is illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p.366, fig.3.391.
The seat lid is affixed with good examples of early 18th century strap hinges which would indicate that the chair was adapted to a commode chair at this early date.
