The Collection of Baron Alexandre Paul de Groote 1906 - 1991 Born in Brussels in 1906, Alexandre Paul de Groote was the son of Belgian diplomat Baron Adolphe de Groote, and his English wife, Lady Sarah Clarence Singleton. The de Grootes moved to Lima, Peru where Alexandre Paul studied engineering, later returning to Brussels to pursue his career. It was here, in the early 1930s, that his interest in collecting cinema posters started when he befriended a local cinema owner who gave him posters from the screenings for the films of particular interest to him, namely horror and science fiction. Since that time until the 1980s, the collection has grown and expanded to approximately 3,500 posters, offered here as one hundred and twenty-two lots. The collection includes some rare one-sheets never before seen at auction, such as Dr. X, 1932 [lot 175] and The Crime Of Dr. Crespi, 1935 [lot 181]. The collection also boasts a number of titles from Universal Studios, the largest collection to be offered at auction, including sought after titles such as a Belgian poster for The Mummy, 1932 [lot 215] and a rare one-sheet for The Wolf Man, 1941 [lot 202], as well as other Universal classics including Dracula's Daugher, 1936 [lots 207 and 208] and The Invisible Ray, 1935 [lot 209]. The collection is well-known by aficionados of the horror/science fiction genres such as Ray Harryhausen and Forrest Ackerman, and has been described by the latter as ...a feast of film fantasy.
