GABRIEL HERMELING. AN IMPRESSIVE ANTIQUE ENAMEL AMETHYST AND DIAMOND CROSS PENDANT ON A CHAIN
The cross set with ten step-cut amethysts centring an enamel circle with the words "Caritas Numquam Excidit" and a rose-cut diamond-set cluster, at the Cardinal points decorated with rectangular enamel plaques depicting the Virgin Mary, the Apostle Peter, Saint Joseph and a bishop Saint within a half-pearl decorated frame. The cross surmounted by an old-cut diamond and two enamelled angeles holding a pearl, on a solid chain of fantasy links, the back opening to reveal a reliquary compartment, length chain 100 cm, fitted purple velvet case by Gabriel Hermeling, Köln, circa 1880
