A lacquer picnic set (sage-jubako)
Edo Period (17th century)
consisting of a carrying frame with copper handle and raised on four feet, with four-tier box and cover, tray, drawer, bottle-holder and two bottles, the interiors in red lacquer, the exteriors in gold and silver hiramakie, gold nashiji and silver foil, the frame with branches of plum and camelia, the box with Autumn plants, crane and pine and chidori and blossom floating on meandering streams, the tray with a retreat set on a shore amongst pine and rockwork, the bottles of polished pewter, (old wear and minor damage).
