ORDER OF THE ANNUNCIATION -- Theatrum vitam, virtutes, miracula Rmi P. Gabrielis Maria.... [?Antwerp]: 1642. Small 8° (158 x 107mm). Engraved title, portrait of Father Gabriel Maria and 24 plates, by Barbé after Abraham van Diepenbeek, all cut down and tipped-in (some mainly marginal spotting). Blue straight-grained morocco gilt by R. de Coverly, single fillet on sides with floral cornerpieces, spine with raised bands, lettered in one compartment, the others elaborately decorated in gilt with floral motifs, gilt edges (small scuff mark on front cover). The Order of the Annunciation, a penitential order, was founded by St. Jeanne de Valois (1464-1505), the daughter of Louis IX of France. "Father Gabriel Nicolai, whose name was changed by Brief of Alexander VI to Gabriele Maria, was constituted Superior, and after revising the constitutions, presented them for confirmation to Leo X (1517), who placed the Order under the jurisdiction of the Order of St. Francis. In addition to the triple vow of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the members were bound to the recitation of the Office, the observance of cloistral rule, and the wearing of the habit" (Catholic Encyclopedia).
