SAYERS, Tom -- Death of Tom Sayers on Wednesday, November 8th, 1865. London: H. Disley, [?late 1865 or early 1866]. Broadsheet, 251 x 190mm; 10 x 7½in, double column, in verse (some stains).
RARE. Tom Sayers (1826-1865) was the most distinguished fighter of his day, and the undisputed champion of England whose last and most famous fight was with the American, John C. Heenan (the Benicia boy) at Farnbrorough on 17 April, 1860, the result being declared a draw after 37 rounds lasting 2 hours and six minutes. According to this ballad, Sayers lost his last fight, but he is remembred for his heroism, his "sixteen hard battles" and his unique undefeated record up to the final contest. As these verses so strongly emphasise, his death "in the prime of life" was a cause for national sorrow.
