Lot Essay

Born in Tournus in 1834, Benoît Rougelet (d.1894) studied under Duret and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1876 onwards, as well as at the 1889 and 1892 Expositions Universelles where he was awarded a medal. He produced numerous busts and medallions portraying historical and contemporary French celebrities. He also sculpted classical figures and groups such as Cupidon (Le Mans Museum), Faune et Faunesse and Greuze (Tournus Museum). The city of Paris commissioned several portraits for the Hôtel de Ville from him. Boudet had a retail outlet in de Boulevard des Capucines, Paris.
