Lot Essay

These wall-lights derive from a Louis XV model designed in the 'picturesque' style relating to the oeuvre of the sculpteur, fondeur et ciseleur du roi Jacques Caffièri (1678-1755). In the inventory drawn up following his death in 1755, no. 43 is described as un autre model double de bras de cheminèe ancien à perroquets à deux branches, an example of which was in the collection of the late Andre Meyer, sold Christie's, New York, 26 October 2001, lot 2 (see A. Gonzáles-Palacios, Il patrimonio del Quirinale: Gli Arredi Francesi, Milan, 1995, no. 52, p. 243 for a detailed discussion of the Louis XV model).
