Lot Essay

The garlanded and richly fretted serpentine frame of this console, with flowered and scalloped cartouche, is designed in the Louis XV picturesque manner popularised by engraved table patterns invented by the sculptor Nicholas Pineau (d.1754) and published by J.J. Mariette in L'Architecture Française, 1727-38 and Nouveaux Dessins de Tables et de Vases et Consoles de sculpture en bois, 1734.
