Lot Essay

Jacques Dubois, maître in 1742.

Although perhaps better known for his lacquer furniture, Jacques Dubois was equally accomplished at the delicate bois de bout marquetry of foliate tendrils displayed on this commode. A commode by Dubois with similar marquetry is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème Siècle, Paris, 1998, p. 271. Similar marquetry within a frame of vine-wrapped scrolling bronzes also features on the celebrated encoignure by Dubois, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
