Lot Essay

With their distinctive folding backs, these amusing 'garden chairs' relate to a design illustrated in André-Jacob Roubo's L'Art du menuisier ébéniste (3rd vol.), published in 1774. Interestingly, L'Inventaire des biens de Madame de Pompadour (1764), lists several items of garden furniture, such as 'six chaises à dossier ployant garny de crin' and 'douze chaises de jardin à dossier ployant, couvert de toile peinte' (N. de Reyniès, Le Mobilier Domestique, Paris, 1987, vol. I, p. 68 and fig. 96).
