A RARE 'TRUMPETER' PLATE
Circa 1740
Enamelled on a lustrous black ground with two musicians standing beside each other on a horizontal pathway, the figure on the left wearing a yellow robe looking slightly to the right and playing a French horn and the figure on the right wearing a pale turquoise robe facing to his left and playing a trumpet from which hangs a pennant, the well and border with gilt spearheads, stylised flowerheads and diamond patterns
9 in. (22.8 cm.) diam.

Compare the very similar plate in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p.191, fig.8.20, together with a plate of the same design but with a very rare white border and the figures reversed, from the same Museum, op.cit., fig. 8.21.
