Lot Essay

This design is taken from an engraving by P. C. Canot, published 14 February 1759, which was after a drawing by R. Paton. The battle took place at night in the Mediterranean, when Admiral Henry Osborne, in charge of the British Fleet, detached three ships from his fleet and instructed them to pursue four enemy vessels. Du Quesne, captain of the French ship The Foudroyant was defeated and his ship was commandeered into the British Navy, becoming one of their finest ships; at one time Nelson became her captain.
