This is from the fable 'The Peasant Boy Looking for his Lost Calf' after an engraving by Larmessin, copying a drawing by Vleugels, from which the subject is derived. See Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p.198, fig.9.11 for a closer version of the drawing, together with a plate very similar to the present lot as fig. 9.12, in which the peasant boy hiding in the tree is omitted. A very similar plate to the present lot from the Musée Guimet and the Larmessin engraving are illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p.62, cats.41 and 42.
