Lot Essay

This portrait is probably after Liotard, who is known to have painted her sister, Mary, who became Countess of Coventry. Her other sister, Elizabeth, first married the Duke of Hamilton, and then the Duke of Argyll. All three sisters had a Chinese export dinner service made in circa 1760, and an example of each is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, 1986, p.117, figs.6.5, 6.6 and 6.7.
