Lot Essay

The scene is probably after an engraving by B. Picart. A teabowl and saucer, with wavy rim, is in the Rijksmuseum, illustrated by C. Jörg, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 1997, no.346, p.295. A quatrefoil-shaped bowl with this design, from the collection of L. Vigneau, Paris, is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 177, fig.7.105.
