A RARE SILVER-MOUNTED FAMILLE ROSE INDIAN-SUBJECT BOX AND COVER
Late 18th Century
Of rectangular form with canted corners, finely enamelled and gilt on the top with Helios driving his chariot through clouds, brandishing a whip over the heads of his four horses with a sunburst behind him, the cover interior with two Indian noblemen kneeling on a terrace, each holding a flower spray, their daggers, a sword and shield on the ground beside them, the sides of the box with a brightly enamelled floral meander, and the underside with a bold floral spray including a rose and tulip

Lot Essay

This box was probably made for pens and writing implements, although possibly for tobacco, and may well have been used by a European living in India. The turbans worn by the Indian noblemen in the interior of the box are 17th century in style and this scene was probably taken from an Mughal miniature of that date.
