A PAIR OF LARGE FAMILLE ROSE 'L'URNE MYSTERIEUSE' OVAL DISHES
Circa 1795
Each enamelled with a central roundel depicting a classical urn below willow branches, the white areas as silhouettes revealing the profiles of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, and smaller profiles of the Dauphin and Madame Royale, the border with a spiralling blue enamel ribbon interrupted by three floral clusters

Lot Essay

This design is taken from a print first published in France in 1793. Versions with different borders and other variations are also known. A large circular dish with the same border as on the present lot is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. I, no. 242.
