Lot Essay

This scene is taken from a painting by Johan Elias Ridinger, see reproduction above, taken from S. Ducret, Meissener Porzellan, Braunschweig, 1972, vol. I, p.198, fig.348. Ridinger made several engravings after this painting, one of which was probably sent to China to be copied for this service. A very similar plate from the Mottahedeh Collection is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.I, no.278, p.280. A chocolate pot with this design, but perhaps from a different service, is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p.78, fig.3.34.
