A PAIR OF EXPORT ARMORIAL PLATES
Circa 1745
Each enamelled and gilt with the arms of Arbuthnott, the coat-of-arms, crest, coronet and motto LAUS DEO at the centre, a band of gilt spearheads in the well, and four harbour scenes of Plymouth and Macao, within gilt and grisaille scrollwork at the border

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Viscount Arbuthnott. See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p.327. The service, together with another without border panels (ibid. p.439), was made for John, 5th Viscount Arbuthnott. A part dinner-service with these arms was sold Christie's, London, 5 April 2000, lot 110.
