Two services were made for the van Reverhorst family: the earlier in 1740, as represented by the teabowl and saucer in this lot, and the second five years later (the plate). Both services were probably made for Theodorus van Reverhorst of the Dutch East India Company, and the eight arms of his grandparents are depicted on the plate. Other pieces from this later service are in the Metropolitan Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Musée Guimet.
