Lot Essay

Cardinal de Rohan was nicknamed Cardinal Collier after his involvement in the affair of the Necklace in 1785/1786. Deceived by Jeanne de la Motte-Valois with the help of Cagliostro, Rohan was led to believe that he could win favour with Marie-Antoinette by advancing the funds for a magnificent diamond necklace. Despite her innocence in this affair, Marie-Antoinette's reputation suffered great harm which contributed considerably to her sad end.
