Paris, 1789, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-François Kalendrin 1789-1792, maker's mark rubbed
Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with arched top, of dark green lacquer simulating malachite, obverse and reverse of cover applied with pierced gold inscription SOUVENIR D'AMITIÉ, within gold mounts stamped with stylized acanthus, the obverse of the base centred by a glazed octagonal medallion containing a wax relief depicting a lady pouring incense at an altar of love, a nude child seated aside, within a plain gold border chased with stylized acanthus, the reverse with an identically framed glazed octagonal medallion containing a pierced scrolling gold monogram 'MM' on an engine-turned foil ground; gold-capped pencil-holder and three-leaved tablets inside
