AN UNUSUAL LOUIS XV ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Charles-Barnabé Sageret (fl. 1752-1792), marked, Paris, 1763/1764, with the charge marks of Jean-Jacques Prevost 1762-1768 and the Viennese tax mark for 1806/1807
Basket-shaped box of shuttle-shaped section, with tapering sides, the hinged cover applied with two articulated handles attached with hinges incorporated in chased gold bows at the centres of front and rear sides and folding down to form the rims of the lid, the cover enamelled in translucent green with taille d'épargne stylized leaf decoration and centred by an oval reserve painted en grisaille with two playful putti riding on a dolphin and blowing a horn, on a purple ground, within a fluted border, the tapering sides of the base similarly enamelled, the side borders of the lid with a Greek key band, the spreading foot engraved with short flutes

Lot Essay

Charles-Barnabé Sageret was the son of the gold box maker Barnabé Sageret (see lot 910). He was goldsmith to the Duc d'Orléans and became Deputy Warden of the goldsmith's guild in 1780.
