Lot Essay

Struck during the Second Punic War, this issue was given to Capua by Robinson ('Carthaginian and other South Italian coinages of the Second Punic War', NC 1964, pp.36-74). At this time Capua was in revolt against Rome and giving assistance to Hannibal. The issue is referred to as the 'Capua' group in the recent Historia Numorum vol.I. The types are clearly adapted from those of the Roman Quadrigatus
