Lot Essay

The first 'coinage' minted for use in South Africa, produced for Rev. Campbell of the London Missionary Society - whose emblem was a dove - by Thomas Halliday. Issued between 1814 and 1816, they circulated for around two years before most were withdrawn and melted down.
